On Monday Project Veritas, the non-profit whistleblower organization founded by James O’ Keefe, released a video featuring a person who claims to be a Google insider as well as hidden camera discussions with Jen Gennai, Head of Responsible Innovation for Google Global Affairs and Google Software Engineer Gaurav Gite.
The video discusses internal Google documents obtained by Project Veritas. According to the insider, after the election of Donald Trump in 2016 Google changed course on their priorities as a company, moving from merely wanting to “give people a voice and promote self-expression”, to wanting to “combat hate, misogyny, and racism that might lead to an outcome like 2016 happening again”.
Gennai is recorded saying “We all got screwed over in 2016. Again it wasn’t just us, it was, the people got screwed over, the news media got screwed over, like, everybody got screwed over so we’re rapidly been like what happened there and how do we prevent it from happening again?”
Gennai is also recorded saying: “Elizabeth Warren is saying we should break up Google. And like, I love her but she’s very misguided, like that will not make it better it will make it worse, because all these smaller companies who don’t have the same resources that we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation, it’s like a small company cannot do that.”
The insider also states that Google is taking efforts internally to combat “algorithmic unfairness”, which is defined in the aforementioned internal Google documents as “unjust or prejudicial treatment of people that is related to sensitive characteristics such as race, income, sexual orientation or gender through algorithmic systems or algorithmically labeled decision-making.”
Gennai is recorded in a separate conversation discussing Google’s view of fairness: “My definition of fairness and bias specifically refers to historically marginalized communities. And that’s who I care about. Communities who are in power and have traditionally been in power are not who I’m solving fairness for.“
According to the insider, this effort to promote fairness is done using an algorithm known as “MLFairness” to look at what users are clicking on, determine what narratives are promoted by those clicks, and then decide which narratives to amplify or suppress. The internal documents go on to give examples of “algorithmic unfairness” including a hypothetical where a search for CEOs returned more results of male CEOs than female CEOs. This example is also referenced in a recorded conversation with Google software engineer Gaurav Gite.
The Project Veritas video was removed from YouTube on Monday afternoon due to a “third-party privacy claim”.
Jen Gennai responded to the claims made in the video in a Medium post, calling them “absolute, unadulterated nonsense” and stating that “In a casual restaurant setting, I was explaining how Google’s Trust and Safety team (a team I used to work on) is working to help prevent the types of online foreign interference that happened in 2016. Google has been very public about the work that our teams have done since 2016 on this, so it’s hardly a revelation.”
She goes on to claim that, “In fact, Google has no notion of political ideology in its rankings.” As of this writing the latest development in the story is what is said to be an internal email between Google employees released by Project Veritas on Tuesday, which describes Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson, Daily Wire Editor-In-Chief Ben Shapiro, and conservative educational non-profit PragerU as “nazis” and expresses the view that “correctly identifying right-wing content” is not beyond Google’s capabilities.
